The Low Down On Soil
House Plant Journal informed us that overtime, as the roots repeatedly absorb moisture, soil becomes more compacted. In a natural environment, worms and and insects help to break up the dirt. In order to give your plants the soil nutrients they need, gently break up the dirt with chopsticks before watering. Succulents and cacti are accustomed to more compact soil, so don't worry as much about these guys!

Also, note that it is imperative to repot a plant after one year, in order to freshen up its medium and reset the soil's structure!
