Jessica Helgerson
While Helgerson absolutely loves her business, she warns that it doesn't come without its challenges. "Clients can be difficult and behave in strange ways, staff have their personal lives that don’t always coincide with office needs, contractors don’t always read the drawings, and things come in broken or wrong. And we overcome them everyday by trying to act graciously and kindly to everyone we work with, and to do everything we do as well as possible," says Helgerson.

One of her biggest pieces advice for new designers is to work with the material you have. "Personally, I really advocate for thinking about the building you are working in and designing for the building, not the current trend," she says. "Have fun and be trendy with lighting and furniture, but not with the permanent architecture. I think that’s the best way to look back at your portfolio and not blush ten or twenty years later."
