Secrets of a Magazine Stylist: How to Choose Art

Styling Secrets from a Lonny Cover Shoot: Choosing Art(All photos: Melanie Acevedo / Lonny)
Full disclosure: not every home that Lonny is lucky enough to shoot is filled to the rafters with magazine-ready props. That's where our in-house stylists come in, picking everything from pillows and tabletop goods to rugs and throws to add a bit of zhuzh to the already-gorgeous spaces. The finishing touch? Infusing the home with artful touches, including framed prints and colorful canvases for the walls. When it was time to add a few pieces to Josie Maran's historic Pennsylvania farmhouse, we turned to the art pros.

Our first call was the brilliant team at Artfully Walls, who lent us the gold-framed Meredith Aitken print for Josie's mantel (above), among others. With the site's online imaging tool, you can pool your favorite pieces from their wide array of works—from vintage posters to fashion photography, botanical paintings to museum-quality giclée prints—and place them onto your virtual wall. From there, play with gallery-style arrangements and swap out frames and mats to your heart's content. Better yet, download the Artfully Walls iPhone app, which lets you upload a photo of your own wall and insert art options, giving you the truest sense of how a piece would look in your room.

For original, large-scale works from a tightly-curated selection of contemporary artists, our favorite source is New York-based Uprise Art. Erin Lynn Welsh's beautifully moody diptych entitled "The Big Black & Blue" was a perfect complement to Maran's country dining room, and Brooklyn-based photographer Ryan James MacFarland’s haunting nature images added a dose of black-and-white drama to a textural living room corner.

Uprise's team of experts is on hand to help you pick the perfect piece for your space, and even offer monthly payment plans to allow budding collectors the chance to own covetable art and pay as they go. For those of us who want to liven up our walls but don't have celebrity-worthy budgets, both sites are invaluable resources for infusing interiors with that extra dose of style.
I'm the former Style Editor at Lonny.
