An Easy Kid-Friendly DIY Project with Potted Plants

Instill a love of greenery with this super-simple DIY idea from crafter and Lonny contributor Steph Hung

We know a pretty face when we see one, so when professional crafter and Lonny contributor Steph Hung presented us with these adorable potted plants—which she playfully calls modern Chia Pets—we couldn't resist. Made using inexpensive materials found at your local garden-supply store or supermarket, they turn a basic white windowsill into a lush green escape to perk up any room. And with only three simple steps, they're easy enough to make with kids on a rainy afternoon. Just choose a plain, solid-colored vessel, opt for a few plant varieties with different foliage (spiky, long, leafy, floral) for a nice visual mix, and get ready to turn those frowns upside down.

What you'll need:
- small plants (4" pots or smaller) such as ferns, ivy, and heather
- plain plant pots
- fine-tip marker
- all-purpose paint
- fine paint brush
- extra potting soil (optional)

To start, carefully draw a face on each pot with a marker. Hung uses her favorite emojis as inspiration, but you can try this with anything: a beloved cartoon character, a dear stuffed animal, or try a funny interpretation of a sibling's mug.

Paint over the marker with the paint using a fine brush (or toothpick for very fine lines). If you make a mistake, simply make the features bigger. Let dry.

Place a plant in each pot, adding soil if necessary. Hung made four versions to display on her windowsill. Here, the classic smiley.

And English ivy gets a playful dose of fun with this cute smirk.
