Here at Lonny, we are constantly on the lookout for great all-around bags. Our prerequisites? A classic shape, a functional size, and laptop-worthy sturdiness. Minimal brand badging and year-round appeal are must-haves, too, and we at the office all have our opinions about which designer does it best. But never have we so unanimously oohed and aahed over a line as when the images from New York-based Mansur Gavriel came across our desks.
Founders Floriana Gavriel and Rachel Mansur officially opened for business this April, after jetting between Gavriel's native Berlin and Mansur's home in Los Angeles to conceptualize the business. Both classically trained in design (Mansur at RISD and Gavriel at the University of the Arts in Bremen, Germany), the talented duo eschewed complicated hardware and trendy shapes for an undeniably classic approach—the simple, handsome bags represent the brand's focus on quality materials and timeless shapes.
"The philosophy behind Mansur Gavriel encompasses simplicity, longevity and quality," say the designers, whose brightly-lined totes and crisp bucket bags would look equally at home in the French Riviera and a California farmers market. Made of vegetable-tanned Italian leather, the pieces are handcrafted at a Tuscan tannery that has been operating since 1946. "Italian vegetable tanned leather is special because it is strong...and develops a patina that only grows more beautiful and personal as it is used over time". A gorgeous, sturdy catchall that only gets better as we use (and, let's face it, abuse) it? Yes, please.
