An Education
Wanting to move close to her family in California, Johns took on a job in product development at Pottery Barn and really defined her style. "It was like running a mini product business from beginning to end. You learn a lot about the materials, but also learn to understand the customer and design for them," says Johns.

Later, she really took on a designing role as the director of the brand's catalog. "I would take everybody’s products and bring them together and create stories. It was like being an editor with a business side to it. I felt like I was doing a big interior design project every day."
