Sibella Court, Owner of The Society Inc

10 questions with Sibella Court, owner of The Society Inc.

1. What is your greatest professional accomplishment?

Moving home after ten years in New York City and deciding to expand my career—and, since my return, using all my knowledge and experience to open The Society Inc in Sydney. Writing, photographing, and designing my book, Etcetera, which just won the Best Designed Book of the Year Award. And York 75, the first permanent interior that I designed from scratch, opened in September in Sydney! It’s a sports bar in a beautiful old bank building. I used blue-leather booths, a bar that resembles a library, Vivienne Westwood tartan wallpaper, and lots of old-fashioned sports paraphernalia.

2. What don’t Americans know about Sydney?

That it gets cold here in winter. It doesn’t snow, but it’s chilly. Brrrrrrr. And that shrimp here are called prawns regardless of their size.

3. What’s the best thing about owning your own shop, The Society Inc?

That I can paint any wall and any floor any color, and manipulate, change, and build without asking permission.

4. What is your most prized possession?

My man, Edward; my dad; my brothers and sister; and seven nephews and nieces. And my paper owl that flies over my bed that Anna-Wili Highfield made for me.

5. Who is the person who most embodies “style”

My mum.

6. In what historical period would you most like to have lived?

I’m pretty happy with right here, right now. Although I do have fantasies of summers in the south of France in wooden canoes, striped tops, and espadrilles: very Tender Is the Night. And anything “campaign”: slow-spinning fans in colonial outposts, linen, brown leather, furniture that collapses and folds.

7.With what fictional character do you most identify?

No one. But I really like Eeyore’s name. I had a dream about him the other night.

8. Where do you feel most inspired?

In my shop, traveling, cycling. I’m pretty much inspired all the time.

9.In your next life, who or what would you most like to be?

A racecar driver.

10.What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Beautiful setting, bills paid, doing the things I love. A really beautiful body wash in the shower (Aesop geranium). Being able to swim in the sea. Smiling every day, being loved, laughing really hard at something stupid often. A new book that comes in the mail, finding?supportive people, all the things that make you sing along loudly in the car. But at the end of the day, the imperfections are what are the loveliest.
