Some hotels more than wear their personality on their sleeves—they perfectly capture the spirit of their neighborhood. In Los Angeles, Ace Downtown L.A. reflects its grungy West Hollywood home with indie-chic interiors designed by Commune. In New York, the Viceroy's mix of ultra-luxe marble and sleek polished metal seems a flawless addition to its tony Midtown Manhattan location. And in Vienna, the subject of today's Monday Design Daydream is a paean to that city's multilayered history and Old World elegance—and the modern opulence of the newly established Golden Quarter, a pedestrian-only shopping district (think Prada, Vuitton, Armani)  in the heart of town.

In a 100-year-old Art Nouveau building that served as the former headquarters of the Austrian Hungarian Monarchy bank, Park Hyatt Vienna checks all the right boxes for luxury. Public spaces exhibit a mix of richly veined marble and warm inlaid wood, gilded coffered ceilings and restored original murals. A central glass elevator is embellished with contemporary works created by students at the Art School of Vienna; in the footprint of the bank's vault, the pool is lined with metallic-hued tiles—a reference to the gold bars that used to be stored there—and in the main restaurant, grand crystal light installations and custom carpets strike a sumptuous note.

The 143 guest rooms—with 14-foot-ceilings, some of the city's largest—are no less palatial. Here, herringbone-patterned wood flooring complements the earthy brown color scheme and provides a pared-down counterpoint to intricate gold-leaf and mother-of-pearl wall treatments. A marble-tiled bathroom gives the space a 21st-century spin, with shiny chrome fixtures, silvery accents, and more examples from the hotel's contemporary art collection. The mix is quirky yet traditional—a fitting tribute to the multifaceted city itself.
