See It Now: Inez & Vinoodh at the Gagosian Beverly Hills

"Basically every picture we take is a self-portrait—a picture of how we feel at that moment in our lives."

So says Inez van Lamsweerde, one-half of the iconic fashion photography team known simply by the harmonious combination of their prénoms—Inez & Vinoodh. You may know them for their startlingly intimate celebrity portraiture as seen in Vogue, W, and The Gentlewoman, but it's the Dutch duo's use of digital manipulation to modernize classical genres, such as portraits, still lifes, and nudes, that has secured their place in the canon.

The Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills is currently hosting an exhibition of Inez & Vinoodh's work, almost half of which is dedicated to a series of hyperrealistic floral still lifes that have more in common with the twisted narratives underlying Robert Mapplethorpe or Nobuyoshi Araki's oeuvre than traditional nature studies. "Envisaging these botanical ensembles with an approach that is both idiosyncratic and exquisitely precise, they imbue mere flowers with the force of human subjects," declares the Gagosian. Color us intrigued.

The exhibition is open to the public and runs through August 23. For more information, visit the Gagosian Gallery online.
