We Lit Candles In Our Meetings All Month — And It Was Life-Changing

Candles are one of the best decor pieces to have in your arsenal. Not only can they have a gorgeous design, but they automatically set an ambiance in whatever space you are in. Need a little sweetness in your life? Find a candle with some vanilla or floral aromas. Want to freshen up the space? Light a mint and lemongrass blend. Since we already used candles so often for self-care, we wanted to put them to a new test — could candles improve our productivity and collaboration?

While we weren't entirely sure if our office building would allow us to light fires, we decided to go for it anyway. To be frank, our first go at it was out of necessity. There was a strange stench in our largest conference room when close to 20 people came in for a meeting. We needed to get on the situation, stat. So I popped out and grabbed a cedar and thyme scent from Brooklinen off my desk. In a matter of seconds, the entire room shifted. Everyone relaxed a little deeper into their chairs and felt ready to take in the presentation.

We next took a candle into a small editorial meeting with just the Lonny editors. This time, a sweeter floral scent from Otherland sat on the table. While our close team can always chat freely, we definitely felt those vibes amplified. Maybe we were all just in a different mood that day, or maybe it was the candle. But we all noticed that our ability to collaborate and think creatively was on point.

Now there are some caveats to lighting candles in the office. One editor lit one at her desk, forgot it was there, and literally had her hair engulf in flames (don't worry, she's fine...). We made sure to keep them at a safe distance after that. Scents are also a very particular thing. One candle that one person might love could give someone else a headache. 

The conclusion? As long as everyone is down with an aroma, we definitely endorse lighting candles in meetings. Giving a work environment a slightly homier vibe leads to inspiration, collaboration, and a bit more comfort to express your thoughts. Just keep your hair out of the way.
