You know those dark basements that you're just a little bit scared to go down into. Well the pretty space here used to be one of them. Located beneath a 1920s Portland bungalow, this basement was the perfect place for a family of four to expand their living quarters. The only problem? It was filled with junk, wires, and had no light.

Luckily, interior designer Annie Wise of Wise Design was brought on to work her magic. "We spent a lot of time talking to our clients about what type of space they wanted to create. Since the upstairs of the house was small, they wanted a space for their family to hang out" says Wise.

"It was a tall order, but once we defined those essential elements, we put our thinking caps on and started space planning," she says. "It took a lot of exploration and creativity but we were able to come up with a design that met the needs of every element."
