ccording to Eileen Kathryn Boyd, everyone has a color story. “We all have colors we gravitate toward, those we look good in and are attracted to,” she says. An interior designer with a fine arts background, Boyd makes her design philosophy evident: fear not the use of color. Back in the early ’90s, Boyd worked to find a niche in the competitive design industry. Originally a painter, she’d spent years analyzing the use of color in artwork and studying its visual impact. “I realized I felt very confident working with and expressing myself through color,” she says. Eventually, she combined art and interior design, and discovered her calling: as a colorist who creates interiors with architectural elements, clean lines, and modern appeal. The Long Island home she shares with her husband and two children is no exception. “Every room is like an art installation,” says Boyd. Desiring a “happy, fun place” for her kids, she enlivened the space with highly saturated shades of magenta, cerulean blue, and spring green. “The rooms are all very different,” she says, although continuity is maintained by employing similar colors throughout and by grounding them with found objects and furnishings. “I think my taste [is achieved] through the combination of unexpected colors, furniture choices, and artwork.” 154 Lonny An Artist’sInterior Written by Shawn Gauthier Photography by Patrick Cline Art Direction by Michelle Adams Flowers by Laurel & Lili “Good design is everywhere,” says Boyd, who purchased the Martha Stewart Collection wreaths at Kmart. She tied three together with a festive magenta ribbon that matches the colors of her home. “It sets the mood the second you walk through the front door.” Designer Eileen Kathryn Boyd brings a Long Island home to life with color 2010 december 2010 december Lonny 155
