ASHLEY STARK Vice President and Creative Director, STARK New York, New York 1. What is your greatest professional accomplishment? Ask me that same question a few years from now! My father (John Stark, chairman of STARK) and uncle (Steven Stark, president of STARK) have followed in my grandparents’ footsteps and have accomplished so much in their careers. My impact and influence is just in the beginning stages. My greatest professional dream is the day I can hand off the baton to my children as well, trusting that they will continue building what Arthur and Nadia Stark started. I love being able to dig through the archives and see patterns that were implemented when my grandparents were starting this company, yet are still so relevant today. I pride myself on being able to take that timeless tradition and inject it with a little youth-driven energy….I want to take STARK into the future with a leading edge that shows a true understanding and awareness for the incredible past and heritage that my grandparents built. 2. What is your most prized possession? My grandmother Nadia’s antique desk. It is an incredible piece of furniture with amazing detail and character. Aside from the aesthetic value, it is such a personal possession. Each time I sit at it, I am reminded about the enormous impact she has had on my life, my company, and the amazing things that a woman can accomplish in this world. 6. With what fictional character do you most identify? Eloise. She lives in her imagination, in her own world where anything goes. She is mischievous and loves to get in trouble. She’s a fun-loving girl with a knack for finding adventure in every place she looks. 7. Where do you feel most inspired? When I am traveling in Paris. I go two to three times a year for work. Everything about Paris inspires me: the architecture, the food, the interiors, and, of course, the fashion. My sense of style is renewed every time I go. 3. Who is the person who most embodies “style”? Iris Apfel. She has been like a great aunt to me since I was about 12 years old,…always bringing me back amazing turquoise necklaces from her exotic travels. She calls herself a “geriatric starlet.” She is fearless and never cares what anyone else thinks! 8. How can finding the perfect carpeting change a room? The carpet is the anchor in a room. It can pull the whole room together, adding softness to a bedroom, style to a living room, and comfort to just about anywhere. 4. In what historical period would you most like to have lived? Sofia Coppola’s version of Marie Antoinette’s era. The ornate interiors, the amazing gowns, and the sophisticated parties— what could be better? 9. In your next life, who or what would you most like to be? An explorer. I love to go on adventures and explore and discover new things. 5 5. STARK is a family company, founded by your grandparents. What’s the best thing about carrying on their work and legacy? 10. What is your idea of perfect happiness? That’s easy. Surfing in warm summer waters followed by a long day at the beach under an umbrella with friends and family, laughing and talking till the sun goes down.r 24 Lonny january • february 2011 2011 january • february Lonny 25
