ARTS & CULTURE Figure Study Jenna Snyder-Phillips takes Lonny inside her Tribeca studio P ainter Jenna Snyder-Phillips possesses a keen appreciation for her work’s surroundings. “Art sets the tone of an interior,” she says. “It’s the finishing touch. It provides atmosphere and character. When you see the art hanging on someone’s wall, you know who they are. I love to see my work in other people’s spaces.” This enthusiasm reveals the painter’s early passion for interiors and is one of the reasons she’s become a favorite of Manhattan’s design community. At 19, Snyder-Phillips moved to New York from Philadelphia to study interior design at Parsons. After graduating, she held a series of jobs that led her to painting, and furthered her appre- ciation of the decorative possibilities of art. But the two years she spent in Italy—one in Florence, another in Milan—earning a master’s degree in interior design, while absorbing that country’s incomparable cultural resources, were a turning point in her development as an artist. The influence of Renaissance sculpture, for instance, can be seen in the nearly lifelike proportions of her nudes, while her rich, fluid abstracts reveal her attraction to the dark waters of the Italian Riviera. This month, Snyder-Phillips provides Lonny with two exciting opportunities, an insider tour of her Tribeca painting studio and an exclusive, limitededition pair of giclee prints created especially for our readers.
