HOW-TO HOW-TO I t’s not every Thanksgiving table that comes complete with a flower arrangement in a hand-painted pumpkin that resembles a priceless family heirloom. But when it belongs to DIY expert Eddie Ross, such low-cost luxury shouldn’t be surprising. With fall well underway and the holiday season quickly approaching, who better to explain the fine art of table styling than Ross? Considering his past positions at both House Beautiful and Martha Stewart Living, it’s no coincidence that the delphiniums, dahlias, and roses inside his hand-carved pumpkin vase perfectly match his china. And Ross’ decisive eye and knack for scouring flea markets mean his arrangements aren’t only chic, but affordable as well. A stylist at heart, Ross stresses the importance of editing. “The key is restraint,” he says. His Thanksgiving setup combines an array of flatware, dishes, glassware and objects that feel both bold and complementary. “You don’t want a floral fabric and a floral china,” says Ross. “Otherwise you’ll feel like you just landed at Grandma’s tea party.” r RECIPE FOR A STUNNING TABLE DIY experts Eddie Ross and Jaithan Kochar give their traditional Thanksgiving table a luxurious, low-cost twist Eddie Ross (left) and partne r Jaithan Kochar outside the ir Millerton, New York, home. 58 Lonny october • november 2010 2010 october • november Lonny 59
