EXPERT ADVICE How has travel influenced your sense of style? If you’re going to travel, then travel. Leave your rituals and habits at home in order to have an experience. Forget the hamburgers and steaks and running shoes. Don’t panic because you’re encountering difference. Remember, that’s why you left home in the first place. Also, go with an agenda, but let things happen. Keep asking everyone you meet—cabdrivers, waitresses, shop clerks—“What’s new here? What should I see and do?” Don’t just rely on books; be present. Let the spirit of the place seduce you. Stroll and wander. Be open to the happenstance of life. Do the things you’ve always longed to do. If you’re in Paris, climb the Eiffel Tower; eat escargot; go to the Louvre. But, also, end up in local restaurants that no one’s ever heard of. Turn down an unmarked street. Have an experience that isn’t translatable. EXPERT ADVICE Treasures and mementos line the walls of JeanbartLorenzotti’s office. A portrait of artist Salvador Dali occupies pride of place on the far wall. Her inspiration board is filled with a blend of family photos, favorite quotes, and professional fashion photography. Soft-gray walls and shades permit the books, flowers, and accessories to explode with vivid color. 74 Lonny SEPTEMBER • OCTOBER 2011 2011 SEPTEMBER • OCTOBER Lonny 75
