It seems that the cars just outside my window create a constant layer of dust that's gone but for a brief moment after you vacuum—or dust, or wipe down—and back again before you know it; and 2. I am always running late for everything in my life, and the last thing I want (or have time!) to do when prepping for a dinner party is wash all of my tableware before guests arrive. But Michelle Smith's Sag Harbor, New York, kitchen in the May issue of Lonny has me singing another tune.
Open shelving looks airy and, well, open when paired with crisp white tableware in matching silhouettes. But add color, and the effect is like a jolt of energy. Here, a traditional farmhouse-style sink gets a dose of personality thanks to blue-and-red stoneware in varying sizes and a collection of cobalt glasses. The pieces lend a playful note without altering the feel of the room, striking just the right balance of studied design and down-home personality. I typically gravitate toward more classic shades and shapes. Which do you prefer?
