A Bloody Mary Bar on Thanksgiving

Lonny Photo Editor Genevieve Garruppo is known in these parts as a bit of a whiskeyphile. So when she told me about her family's annual Thanksgiving tradition, I was a little surprised but definitely inspired. That's because every fourth Thursday in November, the Garruppos start their holiday morning off right with a Bloody Mary brunch. Her dad mixes up the cocktails—he takes his with gin; everyone else gets vodka—and always includes classic add-ins like fresh horseradish, Frank's Red Hot sauce, and Lea & Perrin's worcestershire sauce.

To keep things easy before the cooking begins, they serve their drinks up with a side of fresh mozzarella, dried salami, and green olives—a simple spread that nicely balances the rest of the day's eating. And once everyone has a drink in his or her hand, they raise a glass and reflect on everything they're thankful for. I can't think of a nicer way to ring in the holiday.

What Thanksgiving tradition does your family celebrate?

I'm the former Deputy Editor at Lonny.
