Five Long-Weekend Getaways to Take this Fall
Dry those post-Labor Day tears, and plan your autumn escape.
Summer Fridays may be a thing of the past, but there's no way we're giving up on long weekends away just yet. It's time to stow the sandy beach bag and pull that Pendleton blanket out from the back of the linen closet, because fall is the perfect season to make your getaway. Whether your travel fantasies are focussed on crunching leaves underfoot in the city or simply hunkering down in a grass hut by the sea and forgetting winter is on its way, you'll find an unexpected destination to add your wanderlist below.
Nantucket
The idyllic island may call to mind striped umbrellas and dockside fudge shops, but it's still a worthy destination come early fall. While some seasonal spots close up shop come autumn, there is plenty of New England charm to be found—think near-empty beaches, changing leaves, and steaming bowls of clam chowder. Take it from Lonny contributor Cat Dash, who shared the best places to eat, stay, and shop on the Atlantic isle.
SEATTLE
There's no better way to spend a crisp (or in the Emerald City's case, soggy) fall evening then cozied up fireside, surrounded by velvet and leather, and sipping on a craft cocktail. Our favorite place to partake in all of the above? The Palladian Hotel. Designed by Nicole Hollis, and highlighted in our May 2015 issue, this boutique property is the perfect place for a mini vacation, staycation, or just a night cap.
South Beach
Miami is a go-to winter escape for a multitude of reasons, whether you enjoy a little local nightlife or simply plop down on the sand and revel in the above-zero temperatures. Our favorite at the moment, however, is the new One Hotel South Beach. Miami's first eco-chic hotel matches style and substance in a low-key, escapist atmosphere. Avoid Art Basel and holiday crowds and head down in November.
PARIS
There is nothing more romantic than being whisked away (or whisking yourself!) to an international destination for a long weekend. So while spring in the City of Light may get all the attention, we'll gladly miss out on a rue-full of tulips to spend an autumn weekend exploring museums and sipping au laits. Make up for the airfare splurge by booking one of these five dreamy Airbnbs under $200.
Oaxaca
While chilly Northerners plan their escapes to the well-trodden territories of Tulum and Mexico City, we'd suggest a weekend away on Mexico's Southwestern coast. The dreamy Hotel Escondido's 16 palapa-roofed huts on a surfing-friendly stretch of sand feel farther afield than your go-to all-inclusive resort.
