Red is the boldest hue on the spectrum—a color that demands attention and requires the utmost confidence. The most spirited of designers wouldn't dare shy away from shades of crimson and scarlet, so it's no surprise that Tom Ford, the king of cool, designed many a look in the brazen hue when it came time to debut his 2014 Fall line. A ruby velvet sheath particularly caught our eye, floor-length and effortlessly draped, evoking images of comfortable glamour and ease.

Ruthie Sommers, an equally spirited designer in the interiors world, sure isn't afraid of red's vibrancy either, as evident in her L.A. living room. From the plush carpeting and lush tufted sectional to the subtly patterned walls, no surface was spared. Both designs are rich, vibrant, and strong, yet somehow maintain an approachable sensibility—the most striking balance of all.
