Back in my P.M. (pre-mom) days, when I would run around town in impractical heels and capes with a clutch tucked neatly under my arm, I was convinced that my passion for fashion would last a lifetime. Fast-forward through the pregnancy years (in which Hatch Collection was my savior) and the infancy era (which I barely remember at all), and here I am smack-dab in my toddler-rearing, Park-Slope-Parenting phase: in which C. Wonder slip-ons sub for stilettos, capes are pretty much out of the question (how would you sling a bag over your shoulder and still manage to hold two sets of hands at the same time?), and clutches, well, maybe only if I could stuff a set of wipes and a few diapers into one. Clearly, comfort trumps fashion in my list of priorities these days. But that doesn't mean I can't lust after a luxe look for my kids' fall wardrobes. And right now, the brand I'm obsessing over is a recent discovery of mine called Tuchinda.
Based in New York, founder Tina Tuchinda studied fashion design at Parsons and began sewing clothing for her then six-month-old son, Hunter, at night while he slept. What I love about the line is how it manages to be utterly age-appropriate while also incorporating sophisticated details and sewing techniques not normally found in kids' clothing. Fabrics are primarily European and Japanese, and knits are particularly strong—take a look at the boy's sweater above, with its series of loops up and down the arm. And yes, to be clear, these are not throwaway items; the Capucine Coat at the top of this post, for example, will set you back $220. Not for everyone, but a mom can always dream, can't she? I'll take a Tuchinda lookbook over the pages of Harper's Bazaar any day... at least for my life right now.
