What happens when you pair an editorially savvy ideas man and a design-world insider with a background in architecture? You get Consort, the Los Angeles–based design firm that's taking the West Coast (and celebs like Jessica Alba) by storm. With their starkly evocative interiors, Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone reinterpret classic design through a modern, distinctly Californian lens, incorporating pattern and texture in ways that feel entirely of the moment. That aesthetic translates to their Instagram feed, where the duo's sense of casual glamour all but jumps off the screen. Get ready for a design trip you'll never want to end.

THE INSPIRATION

“We're inspired by so many different things. We love bold patterns and high contrast spaces. Travel also plays a huge role in everything we do. Bill Cunningham says you need to constantly train your eye—that's why he goes back to Paris every year. In the past couple of years we've traveled between New York City, Arizona, and all over California. Telluride, Colorado is our favorite, hands down. It's so remote and gorgeous. We've traveled there in every season and it's always something new. From massive snow storms to beautiful gushing waterfalls in the summer, Telluride is a magical place. Our next big trip is to Bali, and we cannot wait!”

THE BUSINESS

“When we got together, a few of our friends who had just purchased new homes (one in Los Feliz, California, and one in Telluride) asked us if we would have the time to design them on the side. We jumped at the opportunity. Both projects turned out great, one thing lead to another, and now we're getting ready to open a home decor store in Los Angeles! We just signed a deal for a house in Lake Tahoe and are working on a fantastic Venice Beach home for a former Facebook employee.”

THE PASSION

“We like to riff on classic sensibilities with bold patterns and texture. We love to constantly find new sources. There are so many great people out there who are creating fantastic objects in the market. It's so exciting to find those vendors and artisans and to curate all of the objects into one great space. We once had a vendor ask us if the bed we were having made for a client was going to be an active bed. We obliged, 'Yes.' Clients can also be pretty fun these days—we love clients with lots of ideas to bring to the table. It's an exciting challenge to work with their ideas and your own to make a compelling space. ”

THE FEED

“We try to document our installs and our process as much as possible. People love to see the stages we go through with projects. Then the other part is posting things that inspire us. It's pretty casual but we try to keep a certain visual pace with everything. We describe our style as cutting-edge classic. Before any photo goes up, we stop and ask ourselves, 'Is this cutting edge classic?' If it's not, we try again.”
