For many, Portland conjures up visions of snuggling in Pendleton throws, indulging in hyper-artisanal ice cream, and overhearing Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen interrogate their waitress about the precise origins of their chicken dinner. At Sentinel, you can tick off two out of three of these boxes soon after checking in.

Most recently known as The Governor Hotel, the newly reopened—after undergoing a six-million-dollar renovation—100-room property features can't-fake-it grand architectural details that testify to the historic building's early 20th-century origins (see: the gilt plaster relief detailing on the lobby's soaring ceilings).

Step off the elevator en route to your room, and you're greeted with any number of high-profile fellow residents: the hotel's signature art collection comprises oversized black-and-white portraits of cultural icons ranging from Vivienne Westwood to Martin Luther King Jr., scattered throughout its common spaces.

Of course, the main draw of the thoughtfully appointed hotel is its guest rooms, replete with details that make it feel like home, if home was a fully serviced design-minded suite with deep emerald walls, a cloud-like bed, the aforementioned outdoorsy-luxe blankets, and quirky details such graphic design prints by local artists and vintage sporting goods. There's even a "Make it So" option on the phone that can be used to special-order a pillow to your specifications, an iPod loaded with a Portland-centric playlist, or a scoop of the city's legendary Salt & Straw honey balsamic strawberry with black pepper ice cream.

And if for some reason that magical button cannot satisfy your every bidding, odds are that an Astoria (a classic cocktail comprising Oxley gin, Nolly Prat dry vermouth and orange bitters) from Jackknife, the property's in-house bar should do the trick. Sipping on one of these while admiring the wood chevron walls and stunning vintage Rejuvenation light fixtures that dot the swank watering hole will surely cure what ails you.
