When Damien Hirst’s exhibition Beyond Belief
opened in 2007 at White Cube in London, its memento mori centerpiece caused quite a stir. "For the Love of God," a life-size human skull cast in platinum and embedded with 8,601 diamonds, quickly stole the show, generating considerable buzz. Since then, skull imagery has become increasingly trendy; it’s one part classic, one part decadent, and two parts mysterious. In addition to iconic pieces such as the Fornasetti plate, we’ve included some refreshing and recent interpretations of the skull, with fresh forms and surprising colors. In fact, because the silhouette of a skull is so powerful, it isn’t easily overwhelmed, making it the perfect medium for constantly changing design.
