Take Root Takes Brooklyn
This Michelin-starred restaurant is the size of a small living room—and a stylish one, at that.
Opening a 12-seat eatery that's only open four nights a week seems like a major risk in the New York restaurant landscape. But for Take Root, the sprite of a spot founded by couple Anna Hieronimus and Elise Kornack on a residential block in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood, it's proved a bonafide recipe for success. So much so, that the restaurant (with a kitchen helmed by Kornack, a Food Network success story who counts heavy-hitters Aquavit and The Spotted Pig as previous employers), received a Michelin star this year. The food, offered in a multi-course 8pm seating, is at once balanced, bright, bold—and quite beautiful.
A typical dish could be anything from yellow beets with hickory smoked egg yolk and kumquat to a riff on clam chowder with turnips, littleneck clams, and macadamia nuts. Dessert items don't disappoint either—a roasted white chocolate parfait, with quince, crispy wheat berry, and cranberry is served as a sort of flavor, and compositional, yin-yang.
"Take Root is a very personal space—we designed it ourselves with no help from an interior designer," says Hieronimus. Mossy green walls are flanked by crisp white accents—a clean-lined bead board bar, a whitewashed zinc ceiling. From flea market art finds to internet-sourced Eames chairs, decor details only add to the breezy, homey vibe. “As the restaurant is intimate, it’s important to keep things light and airy, which is where our plants come in,” adds Hieronimus. Hence the statement-making wall of greenery, featuring a smattering of hanging ceramic planters made by local designer Farrah Sit. The ultimate aim of the couple and business partners? To create an experience that feels like a personal invitation into their home.
