An Indian-Summer Cocktail, Sweet Treats, and What Design Insiders are Crushing On Now
The annual What's New What's Next at the New York Design Center didn't disappoint in its lineup of trends to watch.
There's a reason What's New What's Next is one of our favorite design-industry events each year. First, its location at the New York Design Center—home to covetable brands ranging from AERIN and the New Traditionalists to up-and-comer Kenneth Cobonpue and the rarefied shopping experience that is 1stdibs. Then there's the excitement of seeing decorating-world grande dames mixing it up with fresh new faces on panels led by some of the biggest editors in the business. Finally, let's face it—WNWN is simply one of the coolest networking parties there is. This year, Lonny hosted a program for the 4th floor showrooms on the theme of "Iconic New York" (see our previous coverage here). Yes, Momofuku Milk Bar's Birthday Truffles were definitely in attendance.
To help get the party started, we called upon an all-star team of contributors. Sicilian blood-orange liqueur Solerno (aka the spirit we at Lonny couldn't stop drinking all summer long) kept that warm-weather feeling alive with its signature Solerno Smash—recipe below. Lonny contributor Cat Dash shopped the flower market for transitional blooms that perfectly complemented Solerno's deep-crimson bottle. And ForYourParty.com worked with us to create the chicest set of custom cocktail napkins we've seen lately—navy-and-gold designs complete with quotes from design luminaries Dorothy Draper, Bunny Williams, and Kathryn M. Ireland.
SOLERNO SMASH
4 oz Solerno
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 orange wedge squeezed and dropped in
2 dashes orange bitters
6 mint leaves
Assemble all ingredients (no need to muddle mint). Shake well and strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass. Garnish with a blood-orange wheel.
To amp up the event's social-media presence, design-world influencers such as Sketch42's Nicole Cohen and the ladies of J+G Design were on hand to document the proceedings on the @nydc Instagram feed. Glimpse a few of our top vignettes here—and see you at next year's can't-miss festivities.
