It's official. Pantone's brand new Color of the Year 2018 is here and it looks like we are going to have to start incorporating Ultra Violet into our color palettes. While we are happy the year of Greenery is over, using this new hue will definitely be a design challenge.
"Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future," shares Pantone. "Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets."
To help designers come up with creative ways of using Ultra Violet, Pantone has released a number of unique palettes incorporating the hue into the mix. The company has also collaborated with Kravat to curate home products in the hue. Pantone has definitely been able to predict the trendiest colors before (just look at Rose Quartz spurring the millennial pink movement), so we just might see purple as our next generational shade.
