First Things First
If you're using an old piece of furniture, sand the finish off completely to 220 grit. Lightly wet the surface of your piece with a damp rag and let it dry. "This is called raising the grain, which makes any little fuzzies stand up," says Ossana. "Skipping this step will mean more work later." Once the piece is dry, the surface will feel slightly fuzzy. Gently sand the entire surface again with 220 grit sandpaper, using your sanding block for any large flat surfaces. Wipe or vacuum off all of the sanding dust.
