(Courtesy BOOK/SHOP)Book storage is a hard thing to mess up—whether bound in paper or leather, spines can stand on their own in a blocky stack or occupy a shelf, coded by color or handsomely mixed. We've even seen coffee table tomes double as table legs. So when someone goes to the trouble of actually employing a bookcase, that's just gravy.

Designed by Erik Heywood for BOOK/SHOP, the Slotted System Bookcase is a contemporary design that's at once deeply functional and refreshingly cool. Constructed in California of natural birch ply that originates from Oregon, each unit is cut and trimmed by hand to ensure a perfect fit (one “foot” alone has 27 hand-sanded edges and surfaces). The finishing touch? A light finish of natural beeswax to add subtle warmth.
