The narrative milieu of ZAK+FOX, he gradually determined, was an adventure story in which he and his dog, Shinji, were the heroes. “I loved the idea of a boy and his dog traversing the globe, unearthing ancient treasures,” he says, “like Tintin and Snowy.” Appropriate to this worldly spirit, the ten patterns that comprise Profera’s collection display a range of cosmopolitan inspirations, from Moroccan tile to Japanese kimonos. By vividly reinterpreting traditional design, Profera’s work seems both contemporary and classic. And by tempering the masculine sensibility of his designs with the warmth and texture of the Belgian linen on which they’re printed, the collection possesses a far greater versatility than its adventure story suggests. “An object always becomes so much more interesting,” says Profera, “when a little bit of history is revealed.” —R.L.
